I may have inadvertently misled you, my apologies.
 
I am actually using 2006 GB, sorry I did not realize, in my haste.
 
I was using some Shapefile in an initial test but I am developing this
for use with OS MasterMap gz/gml files. So the feature types would
always be in from the same dataset.
 
For my initial test I did select multiple shapefiles and add them as
one dataset, as you said.
 
I am still getting the same merging effect though.
