Although security problems in Microsoft software get most of the publicity,
other vendors' software is not immune from problems - and many of these
vendors do not do as good a job of correcting the problems as Microsoft
does. A few weeks ago, Netscape announced a flaw in previous versions of
Netscape, including Netscape 4.xx, Netscape 6.0 and 6.1, which could allow
a malicious Web site to read the contents of cookies from other sites that
are stored on a user's computer. These cookies might contain passwords and
other personal information. (This appears very similar to the cookie
problem in Internet Explorer which I wrote this list about last month.)

The "fix" in this case is to download and install the latest version of
Netscape, Netscape 6.2. There's more information at
<http://www.netscape.com/security/>.

Another approach to all this cookie stuff is to just disable cookies on
your browser, which both Netscape and Internet Explorer allow you to do,
and delete any cookies that are stored on your hard drive. However, you'll
probably find that a lot of Web sites that you want to visit will no longer
work correctly if you do this.
