@Michael J Gruber this is not "just" pango, this is everyone that works on text
rendering, because everyone agreed in 2006 to consolidate development on a
single OpenType-only engine, and now there is only a single OpenType-only
engine for complex text layouting.

Libre Office, openjdk, etc already made the switch, now it's pango's turn, it
won't be alone or the last one. You won't be able to downgrade the whole stack
of apps that do text just because you don't want to convert fonts to the format
everyone agreed on.

So you will do the corresponding dev text layouting side? I though not. You
should thank pango dev because they could have made the switch years ago, they
kept old legacy redundant and bug-ridden code paths working years past their
due date to give you the time to convert fonts.
