Not necessary. Avalon actually has a NullLogger. The current release (4.1.2) of Avalon Framework doesn't contain the NullLogger, yet. In the FOP-CVS you can already find a version of Avalon Framework with NullLogger. I suggest you download FOP from CVS or wait for the next release.
