For this, I think we need to focus more on the fastest/most optimized solution 
(perhaps making a slight allowance for readability) rather than oo, because 
this is a very critically-called portion of the code.  *All* text gets run 
through here, and this process occurs for approximately every line of the 
output document.  (Perhaps not much of a bad thing, because with optimization, 
what you lose with oo elegance you sometimes make up with mathematical 
elegance!)
