But is it possible to use any other fonts than Helvetica (f.x. Times New Roman)
without having to define entries in userconfig.xml ?

Yes, there are 14 standard fonts that come with FOP out of the box:

Helvetica normal, bold, italic, bold+italic
Times normal, bold, italic, bold+italic
Courier normal, bold, italic, bold+italic
Symbol normal
Zapfdingbats normal

Yes, sorry ... I wasn't very specific. The issue is that I've specified Times (as shown in XSL-FO sample above) as font-family. Now some of my cells have either bold or italic font face. This makes the text in the cells, become of font-family Helvetica (I now realizes that it falls back to default font) but it seems that text location is not done using Helvetica fontmetrics - at least the text in the bold/italic cells are misplaced, so that the text overlaps the cell-border - the text is pushed a bit right as if the text location is based in the font being regular Times New Roman, but in fact FOP inserts Helvetica bold (but that's a guess
on my behalf).

curious. Does the output look okay in the PDF? Are the strange effects observed only when you you the print option to send output to the printer directly from FOP?

The Print Renderer in FOP is AWT based and works very differently from the PDF and Postscript renderers in FOP. If you need to print I suggest you create a postscript file and send that to the Printer.

So short question is, can I use any other fonts than Helvetica without having to
create custom config ??

Yes, see above list.

If not, that brings me to a licensing issue - I assume that I can't (without violating) licenses of Monotype redistribute the TTF files (and generated metrics files) for Times
New Roman?

IANAL, but I dont think you can redistribute a TTF file, unless the license explicitly says you can.

But if my application/FOP generates/uses these files on the platform on which it is
installed - does this violate licenses ?

I think you would be okay to distribute documents created with the licensed fonts, so long as you didnt embed the font definition in the PDF. Embedding is another option controlled via the userconfig.xml.
