Hans:
1. If your Excel version is greater than 2000, your sheets can be saved as this "format." Open up the file in a text editor and you should see XML tags like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<Workbook xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet" xmlns:w="http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/word/2003/wordml" xmlns:ss="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet" xmlns:x="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:excel" xmlns:o="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xmlns:html="http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40">
<DocumentProperties xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office">
...
If you have Excel 2000, you will see markup like this:
<html xmlns:o="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xmlns:x="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:excel" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40">
<head>
<meta name="Excel Workbook Frameset">
<meta http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1252">
<meta name=ProgId content=Excel.Sheet>
...
2. Any XML parser and transformer will do. I use Xerces and Xalan to do most of my work. Keep in mind that you will still need to code the stylesheet, but you should only need to do that once.
