I'm sure there are rules, but it's not worth knowing them. Worth knowing is that a full rebuild sometimes helps if weird stuff happens. :-) A java.lang.IncompatibleClassChangeError is a clear indicator that a full rebuild is worth a try (but not always a solution, see also Javadocs on the error).
