Hmm, ok, unfortunately my fo files are automatically generated after from an xslt conversion, so I can't really get rid of the tabs that easily, so please let me know about any fixes.

Sorry. Ok, only after copying the content into a stand-alone XML file did I see that there are tab characters in the file. In this particular case they are not converted to spaces and because the font does not contain a glyph for the tab character you get the "#" characters. I'll have to run this by our whitespace specialists because my interpretation of the case here could be wrong, but I think you've just uncovered a bug with linefeed-treatment="ignore". In the meantime, just replace the tab characters with spaces and you should at least not get any "#" characters in the output anymore. I still think the behaviour after that is wrong but we'll have to take a closer look, first.
