Had a quick look at the code and the vertical-align shorthand expansion does indeed not support percentages. You could try to use the expanded properties instead (see XSL-FO spec 7.29.22). In this particular case vertical-align="50%" is suppose to be expanded into: alignment-baseline="baseline" alignment-adjust="50%" baseline=shift="baseline" dominant-baseline="auto" This actually means under 'usual circumstances' vertical-align="50%" is equivalent to alignment-adjust="50%".
