Not entirely sure if I understand the problem, but it seems as if you
are looking for this:

That said, the default value should be of 'page-sequence'. The
compliance page shows that FOP 0.20.5 doesn't implement this
property, maybe the limitation is precisely this (?)
If you can upgrade to FOP 0.92, it should work like you described
without explicitly having to specify the retrieve-boundary on the
retrieve-marker.
