I'm sure others will like to respond as well, but I can provide some information based on my observations as a contributor and committer on the FOP project:
(1) a new revision, FOP 1.1, is being prepared for release, which will
contain, in addition to bug fixes:
- support for complex scripts, including bidirectional scripts (arabic,
hebrew), indic scripts (devanagari, tamil, etc.), and southeast asian
scripts (thai, etc)
- support for font specific advanced typographic features with
non-complex scripts, specifically, those enabled by opentype advanced
typographic tables
- improved support for PDF rendering, including
- CMYK color encoding
- spot color
- bitmap conversion mode
- 128-bit encryption
- object streams
- improved accessibility support
(2) Following a FOP 1.1 release, I anticipate other improvements as we move
forward, including:
- support for vertical writing modes
- improved support for CJK language handling
- support for CFF encoded fonts
- support for alternative line break algorithms, e.g., first fit, best
(less than optimal) fit
- introduction of XSL-FO 2.0 features
- improved PDF support, including optional content groups, catalog
extensions, etc.
Of course, improvements to FOP are driven by the user and developer
community. The more active contributions, the faster improvements may
occur. At this point in time, most of the work on FOP is sponsored by a few
commercial users of FOP that wish to see it be maintained and improved. Of
course, this also results in a focus on those features that these users
find important. Sometimes this results in some features being ignored or
deferred due to lack of interest.
If Zert AB wishes to aid your customers, it would be useful for you to:
- provide input on which new features, extensions, bugs, etc., are
important for you to see addressed
- provide resources to assist in the development and maintenance of
these features, etc.
The more users which actively use and support FOP, the better the product
will become.
Regards,
Glenn Adams
