The other thing is that if I open the file directly in //hex mode// then the hex values are correct but the characters in the right pane are garbled and are apparently not drawn from UTF-8 encoding. I admit the UTF-8 is variable-width encoding and it is not easy to implement the correct behavior. At least I can live with it :-)). The unix hexdump is similar in that aspect.
