Did you try to reinstall XP? I use pspad in several pcs with windows 7, vista and xp and I don't have any problem. Sometimes it crashes, yes, but rarely, very rarely. Maybe you installed some programs that conflict. You should get a fresh installation of XP (latest service pack and latest patch), install pspad and see if it craches. Then install one by one all the programs you are using and see what conflicts.
