I've also experienced this issue. Just happened. If there's one thing a text editor should not do, it's crash and leave you with nothing. No backup copy, no temp location, nothing. Bad bad bad. So I can't really afford to use it anymore, unfortunately. Like the original poster, I've been a big fan. Even if I have to spend money. My work is more important than free.
The only thing that's new for me is I've been using it to write longer things. It seems to choke on length, for me. A paragraph that's a bit too long, or a copy/paste that's too big. But I have no idea. And not really willing to try.
