In section 5.2.2 of the Serial ATA spec I have (Rev. 1.0) it proposes an optional 
master/slave "emulation" mode.  It offers an explaination of how to handle it also.

As I understand it, the proposal is for master ONLY.  No slave on the 
SATA bus.
