Noting that FDISK is renamed Disk Manager in Win 2K/XP (and that XP doesn't offer a
Dos boot option), I wonder how much of the MBR the Disk Manager preserves how
carefully when I right click to ask to initialise a disk.

I know once I saw the Win Disk Manager preserve enough of the MBR that the string
"VIRUS" endured. Since then I really wanted to start over, I first wrote zeroes over
the MBR (and more), and only then did I ask the Disk Manager to initialise the disk.

If all you want is a valid MBR, run FDISK /MBR. This will rewrite the code
part of an MBR and preserve the partition table...

I get a lot of questions like this...

Can anyone suggest a "disk doctor" program that can restore the MBR
sector data on an external 1394/Firewire hard disk?

Any ideas out there?

Thanks.

Hale
