There are CD and DVD devices with firmware that can be updated. You are lucky if you have one of these things. Most devices I've seen are not of that quality. Most I've seen you can't even identify the manufacturer - not by looking at the ID data or by looking at the PCB or the chips. But then these are probably devices made in the Far East and sold into the discount computer market for less than $20US then they retail for less than $40US. Everyone must remember that there is a huge "PC" industry out there that buys/sells the cheapest hardware available from vendors that are here today and gone tomorrow. In the real world we don't deal with "qualified vendors" that have gone through a 6 month qualification testing program and have devices that support every optional ATA/ATAPI feature/command.
