Would it be possible in ATA/ATAPI-8 to require the Model Number field (words 27-46 in IDENTIFY DEVICE) start with a manfacturer identification string? Do existing ATA devices already do this? The Model Number format would be: * must contain ASCII characters (same as today) * uses the swaps-every-pair-of-bytes order (same as today) * must be left-aligned (no padding with spaces at the start of the string) * start with a manufacturer ID string. This could be an 8-byte T10 vendor ID string, or a new T13 vendor ID if the 8-byte T10 IDs are deemed unsatisfactory (unfortunately requiring T13 to maintain a database of said IDs). It must not contain an ASCII space. * follow with an ASCII space (20h) * follow with ASCII characters chosen by that manufacturer (the model number of the device) If this rule were in place, then the combination of the Model Number and Serial Number fields would be worldwide unique. This would help in SCSI to ATA translators (SAT), which need to construct a worldwide unique logical unit name but might only have the Model Number and Serial Number on which to base it. -- Rob Elliott, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hewlett-Packard Industry Standard Server Storage Advanced Technology https://ecardfile.com/id/RobElliott
