We've talked about it at meetings, but someone is going to need to bring forward a proposal against ATA-8 to make it mandatory. I currently check "word93 == 0" to detect a SATA device, but this is just a guess based on (a) vague language in the SATA 1.0a docs and (b) field experience. I would prefer a "I am SATA" feature bit.
