We've talked about it at meetings, but someone is going to need to bring
forward a proposal against ATA-8 to make it mandatory.

I would (as I agree this is needed) - but I'm already neck deep in
proposals I've committed to (as well as the PATA draft).

Has anyone yet devised a way for OS drivers to differentiate between 
SATA devices, and PATA devices attached via a SATA bridge?

I currently check "word93 == 0" to detect a SATA device, but this is 
just a guess based on (a) vague language in the SATA 1.0a docs and (b) 
field experience.

I would prefer a "I am SATA" feature bit.
