I ran into this confusion earlier this week.
I think my interpretation matches yours. I believe the bit in Word 85 is the
actual device enable bit for SET FEATURES, and the bit in Word 128 is related
to the current device state. I think this may be the same expectations on the “support”
bits as there are two of those also. Regards, Brian Dees Intel Corporation Storage Initiatives

[EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Curtis Stevens In reading ATA/ATAPI-7 there are 2 sets of security enabled
bits, on in word 85 bit 1 and another in word 128 bit 1. I also noted
that there are redundant implemented bits as well, but that is not my question… There is nothing in these bits that denotes what Security
Enabled means. I believe that some of the bits in word 128 are actually
referring to states in the security state transition diagrams. Its just
not clear… ------------------------------------------------- Curtis E. Stevens Phone: 949-672-7933 Cell: 949-307-5050 E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Ambition
