Past form suggests that addon Servers which are released after the
associated major version was first released tend to end up as an integral
part of the next major version (and sometimes even the next Service Pack,
with the PCAD Interface Servers being one such example). For Servers which
are really useful, like the Power Print server, this is fine. But I am yet
another user who didn't request, want, or need this feature, and I do have
to wonder if anyone requested it, as I can not recall anyone on this forum
ever doing so.
I am well aware that the members of this forum are only a tiny minority of
all Protel users; that said, those who are not members of it are probably
usually far less likely to have Protel's attention as far as possible future
changes are concerned.
Maybe Protel provided this feature because they assessed that it would be
relatively easy to provide. The other scenario that comes to mind is that
they have assessd that this is something that users want, or *will* want,
even if the users themselves are not yet aware of this.
It could be ironic if this is an attempt by Protel to gain an edge on their
competitors, and a competitor responds by providing a feature which *both*
meets a real user requirement (or otherwise provides a recognisable benefit
to the user), *and* does so in a comprehensive, well-thought-through manner.
As others can doubtless guess, my preference would also have been for Protel
to have addressed some of the bugs whose nature and existence have been
described on this forum. And to the extent that they have to keep their
share-holders happy, I can appreciate that new versions will incorporate not
just bug fixes (hopefully, and also hopefully, not too many new bugs (or old
bugs from times-past putting in a fresh appearance)) but some *new* (and
enhanced) features as well. New features which are really useful or helpful,
and/or provide what users have been requesting is fine, but the provision of
this Server leads me to wonder *how* they select *what* new features will be
provided...
Regards,
Geoff Harland.
