Yup, start mousing with the left hand. I wrote a big document once, and
had carpal tunnel syndrome for a week. I moved the trackball (I get a
deathgrip on the mouse and it makes my hand hurt, too) to the left side
and got used to having it there. I was a little slower with it, but still
productive until the CTS let up. You might try a trackball, as they are
much easier to use than a mouse. The trick is you can take your fingers
off the ball and the cursor won't move when you click a button, which
is an infuriating problem with a mouse. It is nearly impossible to click
the mouse without moving the pointer - hence the deathgrip.

With luck, you may be able to do a little one-finger poking of the keyboard
with the cast.
