I used the 'low bidder' to see how they were, and had some problems.
This was Imagineering, also known as www.pcbnet.com
They certainly had a good price, about half of what Advanced Circuits
charged when I quoted these boards. but, they made up a batch that
had shorted two split power plane regions, and didn't detect this in
the electrical test. They remade the boards, and the 2nd batch had 3
open tracks and a really nasty short between a power plane and the ground
plane. Of course, this was only found after the board was stuffed with
about $1600 in parts. I had to pump 6 Amps through the power plane
to get enough voltage drop so I could locate the short. I cut down into
the board with an exacto knife to clear the short.
So, it became pretty clear that Imagineering will take your money for
electrical test, but they obviously DON'T actually TEST the boards!
YIKES! But, after getting one whole batch that should have failed electrical
test, and 4 boards on another batch that had single, random defects, there
is no other conclusion!
Well, I have real concerns about doing business with an outfit like that
again. Anyway, I suspect that the risk of another disaster on a really
complex multilayer board is just too high, so I probably won't have them
do any more multilayers.
But, if the fabricator accepts payment for electrical test without doing it,
who knows WHAT they do in the photoplotting department!
