I would assume the libraries used by the original designer are still in
play.
Checking created macros for footprint updates shouldn't be a prob but if any
changes to the pcb are required how do you tell if you're still linked to
the correct library ? More of a problem if the designs span several Protel
format versions.
If past designers have used their own personal footprint libraries, possibly
containing parts with the same names as in the one that is currently used,
things will get very hairy. Been there, got bitten and I'm sure nearly
everybody has a similar story about the much maligned previous employee with
a distaste for orderly documentation.
Some form of library version and linking control would be very handy on
current designs and invaluable when dusting off and modifying dim dark
relics.
Perhaps an addition to the Document Options dialog and something similar for
the Sch and Pcb libraries so users can check, even if only manually, that
they are heading in the right direction.
Having a single controlled company libary seems the only way to go in our
situation. Individuals are permitted to create their own parts in their own
temporary library when required and after being proven to work, are moved
into the controlled library (usually by whoever was the slowest to duck
under their desk). Creating new parts or modifying parts and giving them a
new name instead of just modifying the old ones has reduced the potential
for nasty surprises when dealing with past designs although it can result in
a large and confusing library. Preferred parts/footprints and those that
have been 'banned' from use are another story.
I belive Protel could be stronger in the library control and parts
management area.
Anybody else have any comments/suggestions on this ?
