I think Ankur puts the word nicely on this matter :) Plus not to forget is the Opensource compilers/linkers/debuggers, reference documentations and plenty of sample codes to understand the domain better and to be able to put in the best code possible. That's the whole reason I prefer Wxwidget to MFC (from a programmer's perspective). IMHO people who are new to FOSS (and are also programmer) should definitely give opensource programming environment a go.
