I am using xubuntu Lucid and it runs smooth as silk. For lower memory the problem is the desktop environment rather than distro. xfce and lxde are both lightweight desktop environments. Xfce is more customizable and feature rich. I would recommend any debian based distro and installing desktop environments to the taste. Try xfce, lxde and fluxbox and see which runs smooth.
