To add more, I used those VT keyboards completely lacked an ESC key. That
didn't stop me from using vi with ctrl-3 (with ctrl next to A, as Richard
says). :)

After a few minutes, I think it was quite comfortable. Maybe more than
using the far ESC. I don't use any ctrl-3 when I have an ESC key though.
