That wouldn't help on Windows, where characters like
       "   *   :   <   >   ?   |   \
cannot be used in filenames  ('[' and ']' are OK, B.T.W.).

Richard, could you please add '>', '<' and '|' to the replacement
set (or allow me to add them .....) ?
