This has been a fairly thought provoking discussion, as in the process of
arguing for symlinks, I'm now questioning why I like them so much for backups
(I never use them for any of my development repositories).

I'm even starting to think that I could work without them, although if I went
that direction, I'd want a lot more scripts to ensure that everything is done
consistently for security purposes.
