If it’s a temporary branch, e.g. to develop a risky feature before it gets into 
good enough shape that it can be committed to the trunk, you can just click on 
the branch name anywhere you see it, and get a list of the checkins made on 
that branch.  The first checkin’s comment should tell you why the branch was 
created.  You might have to click the “200 entries” link to see back to the 
first checkin on the branch.

If a branch has more than 200 entries, you could edit the URL (n=BIGNUM) but in 
that case, you’re probably dealing with a major branch.  The purpose of such 
branches should be obvious given the content of the repository.  (Stable 
release forks, for example.)

If you had a tree big and complex enough that these things were not clear from 
context, you could add a “Navigation” wiki article.  You’d probably want such a 
thing regardless, for such a complex project.
