They're Unicode characters \u2b55 and \u274c, respectively. If you don't see them properly, there's a problem in your browser or operating system, or you simply don't have a font with these characters. The characters also appear in this email. \u2b55 is a circle, and \u274c is a diagonal cross. Could have said O and X, but these characters came out prettier, plus there aren't good ASCII equivalents for the triangles. ^ < > maybe?? In Tcl I'm able to type "puts \u2b55\u274c" to see the characters.
