such large trust issues, that so few people are effectively allowed to

Yes, Git is uncommon in supporting a federated development style, which is what
allows “Fork me on Github” to work.
Fossil now partly solves that with bundles, but there is still a stark
inside/outside dividing line.
So, here’s my new overly simplified categorical statement: Few organizations
require federated development. :)
Lots of organisations have open source projects and want outside
collaborators. "Fork me on Github" makes it easy for potential
collaborators.
