In general, the proposal looks good. Presuming that I followed it correctly...
I concur with Mary that you probably want to keep more than just the last email sent; some kind of history would be nice. This could help solve the issue of flagging mail messages that don't reach their destination. Some sort of automated housekeeping UI might be nice too in this case.
