Hi Alex,
We are presently using the ODBC drivers that came with the original Data
for Windows & its replacement PIMS.
We use several Excel spreadsheets for our daily and monthly reports that
use the ODBC portion of the PIMS suite. The daily and monthly reports get
mostly reduction data, some manual data entry data, and a little bit of
sample data.
I also wrote an Excel trending app that gets sample data with a sql call
like:
"SELECT Time, Value FROM Sample/" & fHistorian & ".Current
WHERE(Source='" & TagName2 & "' AND Time BETWEEN " & QueryStart & " AND " &
QueryEnd & ")"
All of these Excel spreadsheets make use of ODBC calls to the historian,
but only one Excel user is using the live OM data links. Very few people
are using the Data for Windows portion of the PIMS, and so it is a bit
expensive to buy the whole thing just to get the ODBC drivers.
I know the extended sam files are "outside" the Informix database, but
does this mean a generic ODBC driver would not be able to access them like
the Foxboro provided ODBC can? I did not think it would be easy, but I was
hoping it would at least be possible . . .
Thanks,
Steve Murray

Steve,
Re: ODBC and Informix and the legacy historian
AIM*Datalink can do that through either the old historian or AIM*. You can
get Datalink and Explorer and have a good time with Excel and
live/historical trends. There is a package price for the two of them.
Re: ODBC and Informix
Several paper companies have Informix setup to support ODBC as part of the
work our Pulp and Paper folks do.
However, be aware that Informix holds only reduction data and this might not
be what you want.
Hope this helps.
