My group is responsible for the FoxRemote product line and one of our
supported products is FoxRemote Configuration 0 (X-terminal software over a
LAN).

While we do not know of a way to get the OpenWindows desktop to your PC
using eXceed (Part No. Q0300HZ) that does not involve running another copy
of the OpenLook Window Manager (olwm), you might try Hummingbird's support
group directly.

However, GoGlobal (Part No. Q0300PS) provides the OpenWindows desktop by
default. When GG starts up, it puts a copy of the Solaris desktop on your PC
as a window. I use it all of the time for the reasons that you mention.

However, GoGlobal has the disadvantage of not supporting some features
required for it to work effectively with our 'remote draw' applications. The
most common remote draw application is the ICC. The problem manifests as
"missing buttons" and empty lists. Generally, moving into and out of the
'BUFFER' is sufficient to fix this for my tastes, but many folks do not like
the effect.

GG does have a number of advantages: it is faster, it is much easier to
install, it is much smaller, it uses less network bandwidth, it does not
require copying fonts, etc. However, the one disadvantage is enough for many
folks.

We support and like both products.

I suspect that there are other X-Terminal emulators that also provide the
OpenWindows desktop (I saw an NCD demo once that did), but we don't use
them.

PSS 21S-7A9 B3 (it's on the Foxboro web site with the other PSSs) provides
more information on the topic of X-Terminal software.
