I didn't overly mean to be snippy in my online comments this morning. But I was snippy. Artists write and want advice on how to promote themselves and then post publicly telling the competitor how to. I belong to other groups that cater to a variety of fringe industries and these people are asking all the time how to. If all these fringe professionals and DIYselfers are told how to how will we make a living?
I for one don't (never have) say yes I can, then learn, I refer. I learned a long time ago I'd rather do one or a few things very well then many things just ok. You know I have great respect for your efforts in moving the industry forward - actually in being a more than major player in making this an actual industry. I just feel very strongly about people wanting to know everything for free. And quite frankly they should not get it all for free if they do why come to classes. I know it's a tough topic - but while tricky, there is I believe, some balance in what is given away and what one pays for in cash and hard knocks. I'm not promoting the teach me but don't teach others I just think people need to think before they hand it all way. And it seemed to me the person who posted was not a professional / newbie but someone looking to get done up for halloween. As for the Association, like I told you many times people don't understand it's not an open topic - it's your baby, your convention your association. Input is fine but you don't have to bow to pressure. The concept would have worked. We both know the timing was both right and wrong given the situation with FABAIC partnership. People were waiting to see........... You own me nothing. It is not about the money it is about the loss of exclusiveness. I just really liked and believed in the idea of an association of professionals - stating I am a member of it now holds little value because 90% joined just to get their name on the internet. They did not join because they believed in the concept of a professional group which held to ethics and standards. I know you felt dammed if you do and dammed if you don't with the Association stuff when you started with it and later as you had to figure out where to go with it and that is a grief you did not deserve. I don't have any answers for the Association - haven't really given it thought. I can say with wanting to and trying to start a Nor Cal Guild and not yet getting it done, I am only now thankful the Northern California painters are more forgiving.
