Hi Arla, I am feeling your pain. For several years I volunteered at a carnival for a local church. Not mine. I did several nights running for three years and used it often as a way of training face painters that were new with my supervision. The prices were $3 a face and eventually I was able to negotiate payment for our supplies...$75 for four nights work (total). This year, two of the nights got rained out and artists worked their butts off on the remaining nights which were packed. This is hard labor...over 20 faces each hour in heat, in dark, and for no money, all as volunteers. At the end the organizer said: I hope we can count on you next year. I just said:
I am sorry, but for years I have done this event, multiple nights, and now there are several new face painters in the area, and perhaps hundreds in northern New Jersey. Perhaps you should reach out to those that do not appear at charity functions as often as I do? I believe everyone should give back, and I ask my staff of painters to do two hours/two events of free work each year, which means that we, as a company can do 16-20 hours of community service. However, others should be approached as well. I know they love you Arla, but encourage them to try out some of the newer entertainment in the area....or you will always be approached. After all, do they offer to feed your family as often as they ask you to face paint for free?
