I agree with Katie. You need to show them the value they're receiving.
It's obvious that a church person was asked about your fee and they
said (out of not knowing) "Oh she's painting for free!" That's when
the trouble starts.

I'm doing the chamber picnic and giving them $1,500 of services. They
have a contract showing the price, total and donated amount. My
company is listed up there on top as a diamond sponsor. I'm on the
flyers, signs and have a special vendor table with my brochures. I
book events from local businesses and it's my only time to have my
company showcased at a chamber event. (Our chamber has mixers almost
every week and each company is expected to do something for a mixer at
least once a year.)

I like Denise's approach too. If the NFP is a bit leery abou thaving
you do the cash, have them do tickets and you turn in the tickets for
cash. Your products cost money and that shouldn't come out of your
pocket.

I understand it gives you the chance to showcase your work and do what
you do, but it doesn't put food on the table at the end of the day. I
do many charity events that I offer a discount. I do about 4-5 events
a year that are totally free, yet I get bookings from them every year.
The events that didn't get bookings, I politely declined the next
year.
