It seems quite clearly that the PATH doesn't fully take affect (in all sessions - it definitely doesn't in existing open sessions) until you log out and then back in. Knowing *nix systems, there must be a way to reinitialise your already open sessions with the latest config info - but it escapes me now on how that is done.
