Just to clarify, the current model is that you enroll a finger (storing it's minutiae data), and then when you want to do authentication of some kind, you compare the pre-stored minutiae data to a *live* scan. In other words, the only functions that let you do some kind of minutiae set comparison obtain one side of the comparison data by firing off a fingerprint scan there-and-then. People have made arguments for being able to simply scan an image and record minutiae data, then later directly compare 2 sets of minutiae data, but these needs careful consideration (it breaks the abstraction, and is incompatible with some devices).
