Okay, the cause of this never-ending try-again messages comes from a bug
in fprintd. I will report it.

I think you need to swipe your finger exactly the same way (angle of
swipe, speed) as you enrolled it to have a chance to get a match. Even
doing this, I often have to try again several times. My fingerprint
sensor has a "guide" to keep the finger in correct position while
swiping (see attached image). If yours doesn't, it may explain why you
have such a hard time getting a match. Moreover, after swiping many
times, fingers tend to become wet, which makes scan quality even worse.
And unfortunately, the NBIS library used to match fingerprints in
libfprint doesn't seem to have any image correction algorithm.
