Midnight was a lot later than I had planned to get home, but I'm glad I
went. It was worth it to see the looks on the faces of the developer and his
mouthpiece as they conferred, slumped in their chairs, while they were being
lectured by the board, from Welles offering to read a relevant paragraph
"slowly and clearly" so Barbieri could follow along to Mahoney (?) demanding
to know whether required permits were in place, and when they said that
"they had been applied for," told them that they not only were required to
have them, but that they were required to POST THEM PROMINENTLY BEFORE
BEGINNING DEVELOPMENT. He explained to the public what these permits were
and that they were required in order to protect the abutters and the
environment from runoff, among other things, and that the very photographs
Barbieri offered in their defense proved that there was a runoff problem and
therefore the developers had not done what was required of them. I was happy
to see a quick and unanimous vote in favor of initiating the 81W.

But the best part was at the beginning when the chair opened the discussion
by mentioning that the board had been following the "flurry of emails" they
had all received on the project. Clearly, our voices are being heard, and
this is a testament to Steve for setting up, promoting, and maintaining the
list; to all participants in the lists; and to the members of the board, who
are willing to engage in another, often time consuming, method of hearing
from their constituents.

Thanks to all!
