Date: Fri, 18 Jul 2003 10:39:35 -0700 (PDT) On the other hand.....what
about the legislature's override on the cuts for the court system and the
override for the Mass Pike. The only reason for this b.s. was Fionneran
politics. Those cuts were prudent, correct, and justified, but the
legislature continued on its (read Finneran's) merry way. Both sides were
correct on some, and both sides were wrong on some, but the way the
legislature operates is still a disgrace and an embarrassment to this
commonwealth. Steve Smoller Rene s Mandel wrote: This seems to be a
dispute between the state legislature, which felt the state could afford
to spend amount X and the Governor, who felt it could only afford X minus
$240 million. We won't know who was right until the revenues come in for
the year. But I can't say the governor's cuts were humane, or even
rational: I think he just sliced and diced, looking for a campaign issue.
Take MERC up at Framingham State. It provides essential information to
government and businesses throughout the region, is supported by the
Chamber of Commerce, etc., and its original funding legislation was
introduced by one of the few Republicans in the House. Not the sort of
thing you'd expect a Republican governor to take an ax to. And no doubt
why that cut was overridden by something like 133-30. Rene Mandel Pct. 3
