Dear Mr. MacCormack, I am writing regarding your article about the giant wall. My question to you is, how can you look yourself in the mirror after you write such balderdash? Or is the idea to get a reaction from readers.
Have you any idea of the history of this wall? The original plans called for a wall that was 4 ft high and something like 15' long. Mr. Kotsiopoulis (CK) brought in over 1000 truckloads of improper fill and built a wall that was 26' high and 150' long. He didn't file any ammeded plans with the town or ask the neighbors or anyone else about this. At the Planning Board hearing about the wall, he defended himself by saying that the wall was already built and was structurally sound, so it should stay as is. So then CK agreed to make the wall 6ft high. He did this by leaving 15 ft of the original wall and using fill to cover up the lower 9 ft. He explained this move by saying that the wall requires a strong foundation. 9 feet??? He didn't ask the town or neighbors or anyone else about how they felt about this either. So now CK wants to tear it down because, to his apparent amazement, the neighbors are unhappy with his previous work. To noone's surprise, CK hasn't asked the town or the neighbors about his decision to tear the wall down either. Also, since he's not filing any amended plans, it is unknown whether the remaining landscape will hold water so a whole new set of neighbors doesn't get flooded or what else will happen. Will whatever he replaces the wall with satisfy the neighbors? So Mr. MacCormack, how did Mr. Kotsiopoulis get you to write an article the makes him look like the victim? Why didn't you ask him any interesting questions like did he file amended plans or is he going to just do more illegal work? Or what will he replace the wall with? Or how will he handle all the drainage issues that will occur when he removes the wall? Or without a retaining wall, what will hold all the improper fill he added in place? Incidently, the second wall CK is supposed to build is an architectural wall that will hide the original wall from the neighbors. This wall's only function is decorative (not structural as your article implies) and is expensive to build. Could we have found motive? We don't know because you didn't ask that question either. I'm not a neighbor of either of CK's projects, but I'm still distraught by this developer's destructive practices and your apparent condonation of them.
