Just to make things more complicated, there is always grammar. I pass on a
general message from my husband the linguist, sharing Mr. Baker's Merriam
Webster definition, and pointing out that the MWDN was correct in its use
of "ferment" rather than "foment", since the headline required a noun,
and, while "ferment" can be used as either a noun or a verb, "foment" is
always a verb.
