Hello Ron:

You may remember we (and Louisa) had the pleasure of meeting many years ago at
UB when I coordinated the 35th anniversary conference. What a lovely few days
that was.

Michael Snow was one of my favourites, along with Hollis. I love teaching both
of their work too. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times in
Toronto, at various openings, and in 2018 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center,
here in Buffalo, when he came to perform an improv piano performance
accompanied on guitar by Don Metz (of the BPAC). It was quite impressive that
they were able to perform so seamlessly together - both riffing off of the
other. He was always so gracious with his time and attention.

I am always dismayed that so many people in Toronto only know him for his
flying geese in the Eaton Centre and the crowd sculptures on the outside of the
skydome. I loved when he sued Eaton's (and won!) for putting red bows on the
geese at Christmas one year on the basis that they had infringed on the moral
integrity of the work and harmed his reputation. That case actually changed
copyright law in Canada to stipulate that any modification of an artist's work
could be deemed harmful to their reputation.

all best,

                ~ sarah

Subject: [Frameworks] Michael Snow

Ah, I just heard that Michael Snow has died. This really hurts. One of the most
astonishingly original, inventive, expansive, minutely microscopic, musical,
encyclopedic, poetic, theoretic filmmakers of all time. A magnificent
improvising pianist, jazz avant-garde and sound artist and theorist,
photographer, book maker, public artist, and multi-dimensional hybridizer. His
work is an infinite joy to study and teach. I loved watching him at the various
congresses for experimental film and watching him meet and enjoy Klaus Wyborny
in Berlin. I loved hearing from one of the curators in a Vienna museum about
Snow's amazing performance on solo piano at the Musikverein the month before.
Seeing him in attendance years ago at the conference on Hollis Framton in
Chicago, one wished such a conference for him-never mind, he was celebrated all
over and very often, and will reward attention for a long time. What a lovely
person.
