In 1999 there was a wonderful retrospective exhibition of his photographic work
and films (1962-1999) at Palais des beaux-arts de Bruxelles.

It’s a pleasure to read in the catalogue his : NOTES ON THE WHYS AND

Objet :Re: [Frameworks] Michael Snow

Yes, agreed, thanks for that effusive inventory, of which Snow is fully worthy.

But something else. I went to his large 1994 retrospective in Toronto. Suddenly
the films seemed only one part of a much larger project, playful and serious,
engaginng profoundly with issues of representation in art, not in the current
narrow sense of the word as to what kind of people are included or not included
but in the sense of questioning and playing with all the ways a visual element
in an art work can refer to something else. His drawing, paintings, sculptures,
holograms, films, and yes, rather great slide shows that were not really much
like his films at all mostly seemed of equal importance to me, and I don't
think he can be fully understood without seeing a wide range of his work in
different media. That would include his much later playful video installations,
also shown in Toronto maybe fifteen years ago.

On the other hand, I don't claim to fully understand him having seen all that.
Let's hope for more exhibitions...

Ah, I just heard that Michael Snow has died. This really hurts. One of the most
astonishingly original, inventive, expansive, minutely microscopic, musical,
encyclopedic, poetic, theoretic filmmakers of all time. A magnificent
improvising pianist, jazz avant-garde and sound artist and theorist,
photographer, book maker, public artist, and multi-dimensional hybridizer. His
work is an infinite joy to study and teach. I loved watching him at the various
congresses for experimental film and watching him meet and enjoy Klaus Wyborny
in Berlin. I loved hearing from one of the curators in a Vienna museum about
Snow's amazing performance on solo piano at the Musikverein the month before.
Seeing him in attendance years ago at the conference on Hollis Framton in
Chicago, one wished such a conference for him—never mind, he was celebrated all
over and very often, and will reward attention for a long time. What a lovely
person.
