I don't have the reference, but I recently stumbled on a discussion of the online use of gifs in terms of the pleasure of snippets and repetition. This inquiry could probably be extended to the fairly extensive theoretical work on musical repetition, nursery rhymes, etc. and child pleasure and learning in repetition.
