I am curious what the mysterious softener that they are using is, as this
has been discussed briefly at conferences but no real details have been
provided.

I believe there is a fellow in Los Angeles who has a 1/2" tape machine that
has had the guides cut out for 16mm film which may be able to play it back.
Also it may be possible to play it back on some of the sprocketless telecine
machines; I believe the Marconi machines had mag heads on them.

So, after processing what is the film like?  It is shrunken, you say, but 
does it still curl?  How much has the film width changed?
